Audio video gear, or av equipment, builds your home entertainment setup — speakers and headphones for sound, projectors for big-screen viewing, plus the audio visual mounts, cables and accessories that connect it all. Choosing home theatre gear and entertainment electronics depends on the room and how you watch and listen. A projector suits a dark room and a big picture; speakers fix thin TV sound. Start with the room and how you use it, then choose components that connect properly to each other.

What audio and video gear do you need?

Most setups draw from a few groups:

How do you connect an AV setup?

HDMI does most of the work in a modern setup, carrying both video and audio over one cable between sources, displays and receivers. For sound from a TV to a soundbar or receiver, HDMI ARC or eARC is the cleanest route, since it sends audio back down the same cable and lets one remote control the volume. Optical is the fallback where ARC isn't available. Check the HDMI version supports what you need, as 4K at high refresh rates requires more bandwidth than older cables carry. Tip: turn off the TV's internal speakers once external audio is connected.

How do you set up a room for sound and picture?

The room affects results as much as the equipment. For projection, the darker the room the better the picture, since ambient light washes out contrast more than any specification can compensate for. For sound, hard bare surfaces cause echo and muddiness, while rugs, curtains and soft furnishings absorb reflections and clean up the sound noticeably. Speaker placement matters: keep the main speakers roughly at ear height when seated, and a subwoofer near a wall to reinforce bass. Small adjustments to placement often improve things more than spending more on equipment.

Common questions

What is HDMI ARC?
Audio Return Channel sends sound from a TV back to a soundbar or receiver over the same HDMI cable, letting one remote control the volume. It's the cleanest audio connection.

Do I need a dark room for a projector?
The darker the better — ambient light washes out contrast and colour more than any projector specification can compensate for. Blackout curtains make a big difference.

How do I improve sound in an echoey room?
Add soft furnishings — rugs, curtains and upholstered furniture absorb reflections that cause echo and muddiness. This often improves sound more than upgrading speakers.

Where should speakers be placed?
Main speakers roughly at ear height when seated and angled towards the listening position, with a subwoofer near a wall to reinforce bass. Placement often matters more than price.

Can I pay for AV gear with Afterpay?
Yes. You can split it with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. Our audio and video gear starts from $21, which is four fortnightly payments of $5.25.
