Collection: Butterfly Chair

A butterfly chair is the folding sling chair — a fabric or leather seat slung over a simple frame, low and casual and light to move. It's the extra seat for a reading corner, a bedroom, a dorm or a covered patio, and it folds away when you don't need it. Choose the cover for where it lives, and check the frame and weight limit for how it'll be used.

Where does a butterfly chair suit?

It's an accent and casual seat rather than an all-day lounge chair. It fills a bedroom or reading corner, adds a relaxed seat to a studio or teen's room, or gives you spare seating that folds flat between uses. On a covered patio or balcony a weather-resistant cover handles the weather. For long TV sessions, a padded armchair is comfier.

Fabric, canvas or leather cover?

Canvas and fabric slings are soft, casual and come in plenty of colours — easy to match to a room. Leather or PU leather looks smarter and wipes clean. For outdoors, look for a weather-resistant cover that shrugs off sun and the odd shower. Many covers lift off for washing, which is worth having in a busy spot.

Does it fold, and how sturdy is it?

Most butterfly chairs fold flat for storage or carrying between rooms — one of their main draws. The frame is usually powder-coated steel; check the weight limit so it suits who's using it, and set it on level ground so the sling sits evenly. It's light, so it moves easily but isn't built for standing on or rough handling.

What we'd tell a friend

Think of it as a bonus seat, not a main chair — it's brilliant for a corner or spare seating that folds away, less so as the one chair you sit in all evening. And if it's headed outside, insist on a weather-resistant cover or the fabric fades fast.
