VESA is the standard measurement of the four mounting holes on the back of a TV, given in millimetres as width by height — for example 400x400 or 200x200. The mount must match your TV's VESA pattern, or list it among the sizes it supports, or the holes simply won't line up. Check your TV's manual or measure the horizontal and vertical distance between hole centres. Also check the mount's weight rating exceeds your TV's weight. Matching the VESA pattern and weight rating is the essential compatibility check before buying any mount.

How do you mount a TV safely?

A mounted TV must be fixed into something structural, since plasterboard alone can't hold the weight. On a timber-framed wall, locate the studs with a stud finder and fix directly into them, not just the plasterboard. On a brick or concrete wall, use appropriate masonry anchors rated for the load. Check the mount's weight rating covers your TV with margin. If you're unsure what your wall is made of or how to find structure, get a professional installer — a falling TV is a serious hazard, especially around children. Tip: mount the screen so its centre sits near seated eye level.

Measure the distance in millimetres between the four mounting holes on the back, horizontally and vertically — for example 400x400. It's also in the TV's manual or specifications.

Can I mount a TV on plasterboard?
Not into plasterboard alone — fix into the timber studs behind it using a stud finder, or use masonry anchors on brick. Plasterboard can't hold a TV's weight safely.

What height should a TV be mounted?
Ideally with the centre of the screen near seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110 cm from the floor for most lounges. Mount higher only with a tilting bracket to angle it down.

What's a full motion TV mount?
One on an extending arm that swivels and tilts, letting you pull the TV out from the wall and angle it to different seats or rooms. It's the most flexible but sits further off the wall.
