A bed base is the supportive platform that sits under your mattress, and it does more than hold it up. A good base stops the mattress sagging early, lets air move underneath to keep it dry, sets the height you sit and lie at, and keeps the mattress warranty valid — most warranties require proper support beneath. Choose the base type for the look and support you want, then match it to your mattress size.

What is the difference between an ensemble base, slat base and platform base?

An ensemble base is a fabric-upholstered box frame, a slat base uses spaced timber or metal slats, and a platform base is a flat, low-profile structure:

  • Ensemble base: a padded, fabric-covered box that sits flush against the mattress with no protruding edges, giving a clean, hotel-style look.
  • Slat base: parallel timber or metal slats that let air move through the underside of the mattress, keeping it cooler and drier.
  • Platform base: a sturdy, flat foundation that holds heavier mattresses evenly, without needing a bedhead or surround.

Why does a supportive mattress base matter for warranty and longevity?

A supportive base spreads your weight evenly across the whole frame, which stops springs shifting and foam dipping over years of use. Most Australian mattress makers require solid support underneath, so a base with sagging springs or slat gaps that are too wide can void the mattress warranty. Getting the base right protects both the mattress and its warranty, so it's worth matching a firm, even base to the mattress you're using.

Are bed bases with storage practical for small bedrooms?

A bed base with storage uses the otherwise-wasted space under the mattress to hold linen, spare pillows and out-of-season clothes, which makes it practical in a room short on wardrobe space:

  • Built-in drawers: smooth-sliding compartments along the side or foot of the base, for everyday access to clothing and Manchester.
  • Gas-lift bases: hydraulic struts lift the whole top to reveal one large hidden cavity under the bed, best for bulky bedding and luggage.

How do I match a bed base to my mattress size?

Match the base to the mattress by buying both in the same standard Australian size, so the edges line up with no overhang or sliding. Australian sizes run single, king single, double, queen and king — a queen base takes a queen mattress, and so on. If the base and mattress sizes don't match, the mattress either hangs over the edge or slides around, so confirm the size before you buy.

Common questions

What is the standard height of an ensemble bed base?
Ensemble bases are usually 30 cm to 35 cm high, which raises the mattress to a comfortable level for getting in and out of bed. Add the mattress thickness on top to work out your final bed height.

How far apart should slats be on a slat bed base?
Slats should sit no more than 7 cm apart, so the mattress is supported evenly and won't sink between the gaps over time. Wider gaps can also void the mattress warranty.

Can you attach a separate bedhead to a bed base?
Yes — most ensemble and platform bases have pre-drilled bracket points so you can bolt on a standalone bedhead later. Check the base has mounting points before buying a separate headboard.

Does an ensemble base require assembly?
Most ensemble bases arrive largely pre-assembled, needing only the support feet or castor wheels screwed into the underside by hand. Slat and platform bases usually need more assembly.

Can I pay for a bed base with Afterpay?
Yes. You can split it with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. Our bed bases start from $122, which is four fortnightly payments of about $30.50.
