A bed base is what your mattress actually sits on, and it does more than hold it off the floor — it sets the height, adds support and, on an ensemble, takes the place of a whole frame. Choose the size to match your mattress, then decide between a slatted base inside a frame, a fabric-covered ensemble, or a base with drawers for storage.

Ensemble base or slatted base?

An ensemble base is a self-supporting, fabric-covered base on legs or castors — no separate frame needed, just add a bedhead if you want one. A slatted base sits inside a bed frame and gives the mattress its support through timber or metal slats. Ensembles are quick to set up and look clean on their own; slatted bases pair with a frame you've chosen for its style.

Sprung or solid slats?

Sprung slats flex a little under load, adding gentle give and a softer overall feel — good with foam mattresses. Solid slats sit firmer and don't move, which suits sprung mattresses and heavier loads. Either way, keep the gaps to about 7 cm or less so the mattress is supported evenly and its warranty stays valid.

Do I need a base with storage?

If the bedroom is short on drawers, a base with built-in drawers turns dead space under the mattress into storage for linen and off-season clothes. It costs a little more and adds weight, but in a small room it saves you a separate chest. If storage isn't tight, a plain base keeps things simpler and lighter.

What we'd tell a friend

Don't put a new mattress on a tired, sagging base and expect it to feel new — the base does half the work. And check the base height with your mattress on top; too tall and getting in and out becomes a small daily annoyance.

Common questions

What's the difference between a bed base and a bed frame?
A base supports the mattress directly; a frame is the surrounding structure. An ensemble base needs no frame, while a slatted base sits inside one.

Can I use any mattress on any base?
Mostly, as long as the size matches and the slat gaps are close enough. Sprung slats suit foam; solid slats suit sprung mattresses and heavier loads.

Do bed bases come with a bedhead?
Not usually — a bedhead is generally separate, so you can pick the style that suits your room.

Can I pay with Afterpay?
Yes — Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. A $199 bed base works out to four fortnightly payments of about $49.75.
