A kids bike, or childrens bike, is sized by wheel diameter to suit the child's height, and the right type suits their stage of learning. For a toddler bike, a balance bike teaches the youngest children to balance with no pedals; a training wheels bike suits the next stage; a standard kids bike suits a confident rider on a kids bicycle. A helmet is essential. Start with the child's height to get the wheel size right, then choose the type for their skill level.

What size bike does my child need?

Kids bikes are sized by wheel diameter, matched to the child's height and inside leg, not their age alone. As a rough guide, 12-inch wheels suit toddlers around 2 to 4 years, 14 to 16-inch suit 4 to 6 years, 18 to 20-inch suit 6 to 9 years, and 24-inch suit older children. The child should be able to sit on the seat and touch the ground with their toes while learning. Standing over the frame, there should be a small gap. Measure the child's height and inside leg, and match the wheel size, rather than buying big to grow into.

Balance bike, training wheels or standard?

The type matches the learning stage:

  • Balance bike: no pedals, so toddlers learn to balance and steer by walking it along, from around 18 months to 3 years.
  • Training-wheel bike: a pedal bike with stabilisers for a child learning to pedal, removed once they balance.
  • Standard kids bike: for a confident child who can balance and pedal on two wheels.

What safety gear do kids need for cycling?

A properly fitted helmet is legally required for cycling in Australia and is the essential safety item, sitting level and done up firmly. Beyond the helmet, teach children to ride in a safe area away from traffic while they learn — a path, park or quiet street. Make sure the brakes work and the child can reach and use them, and that the seat and handlebars are set to their size. Bright clothing and a bell help. A well-fitted helmet, working brakes sized to the child, and a traffic-free area to learn keep cycling safe.

Common questions

What size bike for my child's age?
Size by wheel diameter and the child's height: 12-inch for ages 2 to 4, 14 to 16-inch for 4 to 6, 18 to 20-inch for 6 to 9, 24-inch for older. Check they can touch the ground while learning.

What is a balance bike?
A balance bike has no pedals, so a toddler learns to balance and steer by pushing along with their feet. It teaches balance first, making the move to a pedal bike easier.

Do kids need training wheels?
Not always — children who start on a balance bike often skip training wheels, since they've already learned to balance. Training wheels suit children going straight to a pedal bike.

Is a helmet required for kids cycling?
Yes — a properly fitted helmet is legally required for cycling in Australia and is the key safety item. It should sit level and be done up firmly every ride.

Can I pay for a kids bike with Afterpay?
Yes. You can split it with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. Our kids bikes start from $46, which is four fortnightly payments of about $11.50.

Kit out for play

A bike pairs with the rest of the ride-on gear. Add a scooter for variety, a skateboard to progress to, and ride-on cars for younger siblings.

A $46 kids bike splits into four fortnightly payments of $11.5 with Afterpay, and Zip, Klarna and PayPal Pay in 4 do the same.
