The dining table sets how many you can seat and how the room flows around it, so it pays to size it to the space before you fall for a shape. Work out the seats you need, then the shape that fits your room, then the top material. Get the size right and mealtimes aren't a squeeze; get it wrong and chairs bump the wall every night.

What size dining table do I need?

Allow about 60 cm of table width per person so everyone has room to eat. A 4-seater suits a couple or small family (roughly 120 cm long), a 6-seater is the everyday family size (around 150–180 cm), and an 8-seater suits big households and entertainers (200 cm plus). Leave about 90 cm clear around the table so chairs pull out and people walk past.

Round, rectangular or extension?

A rectangular table seats the most and sits neatly against a wall — the family default. A round table is easier to squeeze past in a tight room and makes conversation flow, seating four to six comfortably. An extension table stays compact day to day and opens up when guests arrive — the flexible choice for a small home that entertains.

What top material lasts?

Timber is warm, solid and sands back if it's scratched, which makes it the long-haul favourite. Marble and stone-look tops are striking and wipe clean but are heavier and can mark from acidic spills. Glass keeps a small room feeling open but shows every fingerprint. Family with kids? Timber or a sealed stone-look takes the daily wear best.

What we'd tell a friend

Measure the room, not just the table — 90 cm of clearance all round is what stops a nice table making the room unusable. And if you entertain now and then but live small, an extension table is the one that keeps everyone happy.

Common questions

What size dining table seats 6?
Around 150–180 cm long, allowing about 60 cm per person. Leave roughly 90 cm clear around it so chairs pull out easily.

Round or rectangular for a small room?
Round — it's easier to move around and has no sharp corners, seating four to six in a tight space. Rectangular seats more but needs a wall to sit against.

Do dining tables arrive assembled?
Most need the legs or base attached, with instructions; some arrive ready to use. The listing says which.

Can I pay with Afterpay?
Yes — Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. A $299 dining table works out to four fortnightly payments of about $74.75.
