Choosing between laptops and tablets comes down to what you'll actually do with it — browsing and email need far less than video editing or gaming. A notebook computer gives portability; a desktop gives more power per dollar and easier to add parts to; a tablet suits reading, media and light tasks. The specifications that matter most are the processor, memory and storage. Start with your main use, then match the specifications to it rather than buying the biggest numbers you can afford.
Laptop, desktop or tablet?
Each suits a different way of working:
- Laptop: portable and self-contained, suiting study, work from anywhere and small spaces. You pay extra for portability.
- Desktop computer: more performance per dollar, easier to repair and add parts to, and comfortable with a full monitor and keyboard. It stays put.
- Tablet: light and instant-on for reading, video, browsing and notes. It handles light work with a keyboard cover but isn't a full computer replacement for most jobs.
What specifications actually matter?
Three things decide how a computer feels to use. The processor (CPU) sets overall speed and how well it handles demanding tasks. Memory (RAM) determines how much you can run at once — 8 GB is a workable minimum for everyday use, 16 GB is comfortable for multitasking and heavier work. Storage type matters more than size for speed: an SSD makes a computer feel dramatically faster to start up and open programs than an older mechanical hard drive. Tip: if you're choosing between more storage and an SSD, take the SSD — you can add external storage later.
How much computer do you need?
Match the specification to your real workload, since paying for performance you never use is the most common mistake. Browsing, email, documents and streaming run fine on a modest processor with 8 GB of RAM and an SSD. Photo editing, many browser tabs, spreadsheets and light design work benefit from 16 GB and a faster processor. Video editing, 3D work and gaming need a strong processor plus a dedicated graphics card. Students and general users rarely need high-end hardware. Work out your heaviest regular task and buy for that, not for occasional extremes.
Common questions
How much RAM do I need?
8 GB handles browsing, email, documents and streaming; 16 GB suits heavy multitasking, photo editing and spreadsheets. More than that only helps for video editing, 3D or demanding games.
Is an SSD worth it over a hard drive?
Yes — an SSD makes a computer feel dramatically faster to start up and open programs. If choosing between more storage and an SSD, take the SSD and add external storage later.
Can a tablet replace a laptop?
For reading, media, browsing and notes, yes. With a keyboard cover it handles light work, but for heavy multitasking, full desktop software or lots of typing, a laptop is still better.
Laptop or desktop for study?
A laptop suits study for its portability between home, campus and library. A desktop gives more performance per dollar if you work in one place and want a bigger screen.
Can I pay for a computer with Afterpay?
Yes. You can split it with Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. Our computers and tablets start from $37, which is four fortnightly payments of $9.25.
Complete your setup
A computer works with the rest of your desk. Add a monitor for screen space, keyboard and mouse, and storage for backups.
A $37 tablet splits into four fortnightly payments of $9.25 with Afterpay, and Zip, Klarna and PayPal Pay in 4 do the same. Every order ships from our Australian warehouse, dispatched within 1–2 business days, with a 12-month warranty and 30 days to return it. We're a family-run Australian store, going since 2016, rated 4.66 out of 5 across 5,363 reviews.
