An armchair does one of two jobs: it's the comfy chair you sink into to read or watch TV, or it's the accent chair that adds a seat and a bit of colour to the room. Work out which you're after first — comfort or look — then the size and the cover follow. A good armchair fills an empty corner and gives you somewhere to sit that isn't the sofa.

Accent chair or a proper comfy chair?

An accent chair is chosen mostly for looks — a shape and colour that lifts the room, with enough comfort for a short sit. A lounge or reading chair is built for the long haul, with deeper padding, a supportive back and often a recliner action or a matching ottoman. Decide how long you'll actually sit in it: minutes, go accent; evenings, go for real comfort.

Fabric or leather?

Fabric is soft and warm and comes in the most colours, so it's easy to match to a room — a removable cover helps with spills. Leather or PU leather wipes clean fast and suits homes with kids or pets, though it's cooler to sit on in winter. If the chair's a feature piece, fabric gives you more colour; if it's in a busy spot, leather takes the wear.

Recliner, swivel or fixed?

A recliner tilts back with a footrest for TV and naps — leave clearance behind it. A swivel turns to face the room or the window, handy in an open-plan space. A fixed armchair is simpler, lighter and usually cheaper. Match the action to the spot: recliner by the telly, swivel in a corner that faces two ways, fixed where it just needs to look good.

What we'd tell a friend

Sit test it in your head against your sofa height — an armchair that's much lower or higher than the sofa looks odd side by side. And a reading chair is worth pairing with a small side table and a lamp; the chair alone never gets used as much.

Common questions

What's the difference between an armchair and an accent chair?
An armchair is built for comfort and longer sitting; an accent chair is chosen mainly for its look. Some chairs do both.

Fabric or leather for a family room?
Leather or PU leather — spills wipe straight off. Fabric feels warmer; choose a removable, washable cover if you go that way.

Do armchairs arrive assembled?
Many are ready to use or need only the legs attached; recliners may need light setup. The listing says which.

Can I pay with Afterpay?
Yes — Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. A $199 armchair works out to four fortnightly payments of about $49.75.
