A lighted makeup mirror with proper lighting and magnification makes applying makeup far easier than a bathroom mirror under an overhead light. The choices are the lighting type and colour, the magnification level, and whether it stands, sits or mounts. Even, front-facing light is what matters most. Think about where you get ready, the natural light available there, and how much magnification you actually need for detail work.

What type of makeup mirror do you need?

The formats suit different setups:

  • LED makeup mirror (tabletop): a lit mirror that sits on a dressing table, usually with adjustable brightness.
  • Hollywood mirror: bulbs around the frame giving even, shadow-free light across the whole face.
  • Magnifying mirror: a smaller mirror at higher magnification for detail work like brows and lashes.
  • Wall-mounted mirror: an extendable arm mirror fixed to the wall, saving bench space.

What magnification do you need?

Magnification is written as a multiple, and higher isn't automatically better because the field of view shrinks as magnification rises. Around 5x suits general makeup application while still showing enough of your face to blend properly. Around 10x suits close detail work like brows, lashes and precise liner, but shows only a small area at a time. Very high magnifications become impractical for anything but a tiny area. Many mirrors are double-sided with a normal side and a magnified side, which covers both needs. Tip: if you wear glasses to see close up, higher magnification helps considerably.

What light colour is best for makeup?

Light colour temperature is measured in kelvin, and it changes how makeup colours appear. Neutral or daylight-balanced light, generally around 5,000 to 6,500K, most closely matches natural daylight, so makeup applied under it looks the same outside. Warm light, below about 3,000K, casts a yellow tone that hides redness and makes it easy to over-apply. Cool blue-toned light can wash out skin and lead to over-application too. Many mirrors offer adjustable colour temperature so you can match the lighting where you're going. Position the light in front of you rather than above.

Common questions

What magnification is best for a makeup mirror?
Around 5x for general application, since it still shows enough of your face to blend. 10x suits detail work like brows and lashes but shows only a small area at a time.

What light colour should a makeup mirror have?
Neutral or daylight-balanced light around 5,000 to 6,500K matches natural daylight most closely, so makeup looks the same outside as it did in the mirror.

What is a Hollywood mirror?
A mirror with bulbs around the frame, giving even light across the whole face from the front. This avoids the downward shadows that overhead lighting creates.

Why does my makeup look different outside?
Because artificial light changes how colour appears — warm bathroom light hides redness and encourages over-application. Check your makeup in daylight before heading out.
