The right mattress comes down to how you sleep. Wake with sore shoulders or hips and a softer foam or plush hybrid takes the pressure off; back and stomach sleepers usually want a firmer spring or latex to keep the spine level. Share the bed with a restless partner and pocket springs or dense foam stop you feeling every move. Start with your sleep position, then the feel, then the size.

Memory foam, pocket spring, latex or hybrid?

Each supports you a bit differently. Memory foam moulds to you, cushions pressure points and soaks up movement, though it can sleep warmer. Pocket spring uses individually wrapped coils that move on their own, with airflow between them that keeps it cooler. Latex is springy and responsive and breathes well. A hybrid puts foam or latex on top of a pocket spring core, blending support with cushioning.

What firmness do I need?

Firmness runs soft to firm, and medium-firm suits the widest range of people, which is why it's the common pick. Side sleepers usually want soft-to-medium so the shoulder and hip sink in a little. Back sleepers suit medium-firm, which holds the lower back. Stomach sleepers need firmer so the hips don't drop. If you move around through the night, medium-firm is the safe middle.

What's best for hot sleepers?

Pocket spring or latex — both let air move through far better than dense foam. A hybrid with a breathable cover helps too. If you love the hug of memory foam but sleep hot, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam, which shifts heat away rather than trapping it.

What we'd tell a friend

Buy for how you sleep, not for how firm it feels in the first five minutes in a showroom — a mattress that feels great sitting on the edge can be all wrong lying down. And check the depth against your fitted sheets; a 34 cm mattress needs deep-fitted sheets or they'll ping off.

Common questions

What's the most popular mattress size in Australia?
The queen (153 × 203 cm) — room for couples without taking over the room. A king suits those wanting more space; a double suits smaller rooms.

Memory foam or pocket spring — which is better?
Foam moulds and isolates movement but sleeps warmer; pocket spring supports with better airflow. Side sleepers often prefer foam; hot and back sleepers often prefer spring.

How long does a mattress last?
Most quality mattresses last 7 to 10 years. When it sags, you wake sore, or it stops feeling supportive, it's time. Rotating it regularly evens out the wear.

Do mattresses arrive compressed?
Many foam and hybrid mattresses arrive rolled in a box and expand once unpacked — give them a day or so to reach full shape before you judge the feel.

Can I pay with Afterpay?
Yes — Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. A $124 mattress works out to four fortnightly payments of $31.
