Picking a sofa comes down to three things: how many people need to sit on it, the shape that fits your room, and the cover you'll actually live with. Get those right and the rest falls into place. Here's how we'd talk it through with you.

How many seats do you actually need?

Start with the wall the sofa sits against and who's using it. A 2 seater (around 130–150 cm) suits a unit, study or snug lounge. A 3 seater (roughly 180–210 cm) is the one most families land on — room for everyone without swallowing the floor. Need more? A 4 seater or corner lounge wraps two walls and seats the whole crowd. Leave a good 40–50 cm to the coffee table so nobody's climbing over it.

Fabric, leather or velvet?

This is really a lifestyle question. Fabric is soft, warm and comes in every colour going — pick a removable cover if spills are likely. Leather wipes clean in seconds and ages beautifully, which makes it the sensible choice with kids or a dog, though it's cooler to sit on in a Melbourne winter. Velvet looks rich and feels lovely, but keep it out of direct sun so the colour holds. None of them is “best” — it's warmth, easy cleaning, or a plush finish.

Should you get a modular sofa?

A modular sofa is built from separate sections you shuffle around — face the telly today, wrap the corner tomorrow, split into two lounges when you move house. If your space keeps changing, it's worth the small premium over a fixed 3 seater. If your room's settled and you want the simplest option, a standard 3 seater does the job for less.

Recliner or sofa bed — worth it?

Both earn their keep in a smaller home. A recliner tilts back with a footrest for the footy or a movie — just leave clearance behind it for the backrest to drop. A sofa bed turns a study into a guest room in one motion, so you skip buying a spare bed. You pay a little more and carry a bit more weight, but you get two pieces of furniture in one.

What we'd tell a friend

Measure your doorway before you fall for a big corner lounge — plenty of returns start with “it wouldn't fit through the door.” And if you've got kids or a dog, leather or a removable, washable cover will save you a world of grief down the track.

Common questions

What's the most popular sofa size in Australia?
A 3 seater. It seats a family across roughly 180–210 cm without taking over the room. A 2 seater suits smaller spaces; a 4 seater or corner lounge suits open-plan living.

Fabric or leather — which is easier to clean?
Leather. Spills sit on the surface and wipe straight off, which helps with kids and pets. Fabric feels warmer and softer — pick a removable cover you can throw in the wash.

How long should a sofa last?
A good one lasts about 7 to 15 years. When the cushions stay flat, the frame creaks or the seat sags, it's had its day. Rotating and plumping the cushions buys extra years.

Do sofas arrive assembled?
Most are ready to use or just need the legs screwed on. Bigger modular and corner lounges arrive in sections you clip together — the listing tells you which.

Can I pay with Afterpay?
Yes — Afterpay, Zip, Klarna or PayPal Pay in 4. A $150 lounge works out to four fortnightly payments of about $37.50.
